Knife Coated Banner

A durable, PVC-based banner material manufactured through a precision knife-coating process, resulting in a consistent, smooth surface optimized for high-quality digital printing.

Manufactured by Shanghai Hanker Industrial Co., Ltd.

Product Overview

Knife Coated Banner material is produced by applying a liquid PVC paste onto a fabric scrim and precisely leveling it with a knife-edge during the coating process. This method creates a uniform, controlled thickness and a very smooth, printable surface on both sides of the material.

The result is a banner substrate known for its dimensional stability, consistent ink absorption, and professional finish. The integrated fabric scrim, typically polyester, provides the tensile strength, while the PVC coating offers waterproofing and a printable medium. This material is a standard in the sign industry for both indoor and short-to-medium-term outdoor applications where print quality and color vibrancy are priorities.

Product Benefits

Knife Coated Banner material offers several practical benefits for print providers and end-users.

Superior Printability

The exceptionally smooth, consistent surface allows for sharp detail, even dot placement, and vibrant color reproduction with minimal ink absorption variance.

Excellent Dimensional Stability

The balanced PVC coating and embedded scrim minimize stretching and shrinkage during printing, handling, and installation, ensuring graphic registration accuracy.

Ease of Fabrication

The material cuts cleanly, hems easily, and accepts grommets well without excessive fraying, streamlining the production process for finished banners.

Product Features

The knife-coating process and material composition impart distinct features to the final product.

  •  Precision-Coated Surface: Knife-edge application creates a flat, uniform substrate free of texture marks or unevenness.
  •  Embedded Polyester Scrim: Provides structural reinforcement, enhancing tear resistance and overall durability.
  •  Dual-Sided Printability: Both sides feature the same high-quality coating, suitable for double-sided banner printing.
  •  High Opacity White Base: Bright white background provides an excellent foundation for vibrant, true-to-life color output.
  •  Consistent Caliper: Tight thickness tolerances across the roll ensure predictable performance in printers and finishing equipment.
  •  Good Ink Adhesion: The surface chemistry is optimized for strong bonding with solvent, eco-solvent, and UV-curable inks.
  •  Flexible Yet Taut Drape: Offers enough flexibility for easy handling but hangs taut on banner stands with minimal sagging.
  •  Wrinkle-Resistant: The PVC coating helps the material resist creasing during shipping and storage.

Product Applications

This versatile banner material serves as a reliable substrate for a wide array of commercial and promotional printing applications.

Retail & Event Promotions

The go-to choice for high-impact promotional graphics where visual appeal and color accuracy are critical.

 Printing & Finishing Best Practices

Ink & Profile Selection

Use manufacturer-recommended ICC profiles. For eco-solvent printing, ensure adequate heating and ventilation for proper ink curing and adhesion.

Outdoor Durability Enhancement

For signage expected to last over one year outdoors, apply a UV-protective laminate. This significantly extends fade resistance and protects against abrasion.

Hemming & Grommeting

Allow for a minimum 2-inch (5cm) hem. Use a hot knife or weld tape for clean, sealed hems. Place grommets every 18-24 inches along the hem for secure hanging.

Storage & Handling

Store rolls flat or vertically in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Unroll and lay flat for 24 hours prior to printing for best dimensional stability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions regarding the use and properties of Knife Coated Banner material.

What is the main difference between knife-coated and calendered banner material?

Knife-coating involves spreading liquid PVC onto a scrim, creating a smooth, integrated product. Calendering involves pressing heated PVC sheets onto a scrim. Knife-coated banners typically offer a smoother, more consistent printing surface and better dimensional stability, while calendared banners can be more economical and have a slightly textured feel.

Can this material be used for retractable banner stands (pull-up banners)?

Yes, it is a common and suitable substrate for retractable banner stands due to its smooth surface and good flexibility. Ensure the graphic is printed parallel to the roller tube axis and the hem at the bottom is properly reinforced for the weight bar.

Is lamination always necessary for outdoor use?

Not always, but it is strongly recommended for longevity. Unlaminated, the printed ink is directly exposed to UV rays and weather. Lamination adds a protective layer that resists fading, scratching, and moisture, easily doubling or tripling the outdoor life of the graphic.

How should I clean a printed knife-coated banner?

For general cleaning, use a soft sponge or cloth with mild soap and lukewarm water. Gently wipe the surface and rinse thoroughly. Avoid high-pressure washers, abrasive cleaners, or solvents that could damage the print or laminate.

What does the "scrim mesh density" (e.g., 10x10) mean?

It refers to the number of threads per inch in the embedded polyester fabric grid. A 10x10 scrim has 10 threads per inch in both the warp (length) and weft (width) directions. A higher mesh density (e.g., 12x12) generally indicates a stronger, more tear-resistant fabric within the PVC coating.
